Kumans started out as a story idea seed back in 2017. My idea was simple. To create an epic sci-fi story world designed around natural food. I wanted to create a story that I could I publish through comicalfoods.
My initial goal was to create concept art and then a comic book. I scribbled notes, I sketched characters, creatures, and settings. Then I teamed up with Haolun Huang who designed amazing creatures and environment concepts. I also teamed up with Jason Piperberg who created amazing comic book layouts for our prologue. I also hired many freelance artists to help us build out the world we called the Pie Solar System.
The story idea seed grew and evolved into many different ideas but they all focused around 2 topics. Humanity and Migration. Being a 1st generation American with most of my family coming from Ecuador, I wanted to share stories inspired by my family's stories when they migrated. My passion for designing creatures, environments, and architecture fueled me through all these years. Writing was an obstacle I feared and mostly avoided, but I am tired of being afraid. I am now actively writing to finish this story.
As of today it is mostly a large collection of concept art, rough story outlines, and a few comic book pages. Now I have a clear goal of how I want to write it. Together with my co-creators, Jason and Haolun, we hope to bring Kumans to you in the form of an illustrated novel. We hope you enjoy as we share our process!
