The Sangrya Deck
What is it?
It's a custom poker deck with 3 black monstrous suits and 1 magical red sangrya suit. The icons designs are currently being developed by me, Christian Ochoa and the art for the face cards will be illustrated soon by Zi Xu!
Why is it being made?
The deck is being made as the base component for all of our sangrya games. This project started out as a short story book project with my co-writer Celine but evolved into a game project. I took a lesson from my dungeon eats project and focused on how I could add a twist to a simple playing tool. But instead of making another dice design I turned my attention to playing cards. I wanted to create card based games like RPGs or party games that would use this deck. We kept our story hook of the love triangle between a vampire, werewolf, and gorgon and transformed into cards. That's the main reason why we have 3 black suits and 1 red heart like suit.
How is it being made?
I designed the suit icons by hand by sketching them out on paper or on my ipad on procreate. I went through several rounds of edits before I landed on my 3 favorite black icons. Then I converted them into vector artwork by tracing over my sketches in revit, a CAD program that I use for work. Then I imported them into Illustrator for final touches and then into InDesign where I am doing all my card layout work. Zi just joined our team as a co-creator and she will be drawing up some cool face card illustrations!
